I wanted to put together a list of items available to vegetarians from the top 4 fast food restaurants.
I was shocked to find we have so little choice!
KFC
MENU
CHOICES
Absolutely
nothing available to vegetarians
But to be
honest with the ethics that KFC have about their chickens and the appalling way
in which they are battery farmed, no worthwhile human being would go within a
foot of a KFC.

stop eating at this disgusting and vile place.
MCDONALDS
MENU
CHOICES
- Spicy Veggie Wrap (which is now Vegetarian Society Approved) See story here
- Spicy Veggie Sandwich (again is now Vegetarian Society Approved)
- Garden Side Salad (YAWN!)
- Fries
- Pancakes and Syrup
- Hash Brown
- Toasted Bagel
- Muffins
- Porridge
McDonalds state
on their website items such as Hash Browns as vegetarian but do not state if
they are cooked in separate oil or not.
I
love Big Mac sauce and have on many occasions asked for a Big Mac without the
burgers and after the bizarre looks from the person on the till and paying FULL
BIG MAC price enjoyed this little treat, lucky I have a husband who on occasion
doesn’t mind paying £4 for a breadbun with sauce.
Compared
to a lot of mass produced fast food McDonalds seem to be very open and upfront
with where their food has come from with extensive information available on
their website.
They
have high standards and have won three RSPCA Good Business Awards.
Also
great to know all the eggs they use are free range.
Still
not a massive selection however from one of the biggest fast food chains in the
world.
BURGER KING
MENU CHOICES
- Veggie Bean Burger
- Veggie Wrap
- Egg and Cheese Butty
- Pancakes and Syrup
- Fries
- Garden Salad (oh look a salad!)
The onion
rings and other extras are not vegetarian as they are cooked in the same oil as
the chicken and fish.
Again from a
big chain not much choice at all for us veggies. However the last time I did visit a Burger
King the lovely lad behind the counter asked if I was vegetarian after I
ordered the bean burger and told me that they would be cooking it in a separate
oil fryer than the meat, I found this lovely and refreshing.
No
information readily available on the website on the sourcing of their
ingredients.
SUBWAY
MENU CHOICES
- Veggie Delight (basically a salad sandwich!)
- Veggie Pattie
- Garden Salad (shocker!)
- Melted Cheese Nachos
- Cheese Toastie
There is no
information as to whether their cookies are vegetarian.
The
is some information on the website showing they are working towards higher
standards of animal welfare such as:- We use only free range eggs in our
breakfast omelette and by the end of 2012 almost all of the eggs used as
ingredients in SUBWAY® branded products will be from free range hens, let’s
just hope they can follow this through.
So Subway, 5
items and one of those is a salad and another is technically a salad in bread!
Nobody really caters for vegetarians, they all think we want some mush of vegetables fried in a bun. See my Restaurant Rant.
Come on massive companies put some brain power into this and come up with something a little different for us!!
