The Hairy Bikers' guide to going vegetarian

The Hairy Bikers – aka Si King and Dave Myers – are back with the fifth book in their Hairy Dieters series, and this time they've gone vegetarian.

Inspired by summers spent in Italy and France, where the vegetables were so good they pretty much forgot to eat meat, and with Dave getting into growing his own too, the duo are now non-carnivores around four days a week.

So what have they learned from their forays in the world of vegetarianism? We find out…

Passenger was offered a box of raw vegetables as the ‘vegetarian option’ on a flight!!

It’s not always easy travelling as a vegetarian, as one passenger discovered while aboard an Aegean Airlines flight.

The Greek carrier brought over the requested vegetarian option come mealtime, dubbed “Vegetarian Oriental”.

Reddit user musterknabe posted a photo of his specialist dish on the social news aggregation site, showing what appears to be a polystyrene box filled with raw strips of carrot, red pepper and celery.

“I booked my flight online and chose the ‘Vegetarian Oriental’ meal,” musterknabe wrote on Reddit. “This is what I got.”

Im sure we all find it frustrating when we ask for the vegetarian option on flights or any other sitiation, The amount of times when I get told "well we have a fish option" and I have to say noooooo we dont eat fish, then we get offered the cheese option and you ask if its veggie cheese to get "its cheese of course it is!" then we spend 5 mins explaining that not all cheese is veggie, then the major bugbear a dish with PARMESAN its like people have no clue you would think big companies would spend a little time making sure the dishes they offer vegetarians and vegans are actually suitable for them. Tesla is now making its cars vegan-friendly

Tesla's cars are already eco-friendly, but they just got a little more vegan-friendly.

Yes, vegan-friendly.

The electric car maker is now letting customers order its new Model X with synthetic leather seats and accents, according to a report from the New York Times.

Tesla is calling the new option "Ultra-White."

Tesla already offers its customers the option of cloth seats. But other luxury automakers including BMW and Mercedes-Benz offer a sythetic leather option.

And considering the company's whole premise is about limiting emissions, the move makes sense.

Sticky Aubergines

I am a sucker for a nicely cooked aubergine but everytime I have attempted them myself I have ended up with a oily soggy mess.

After yet again buying another random aubergine in my shopping I decided enough was enough I was going to find something delicious that I could create with it and the sticky aubergine was found!

After looking through a LOT of online recipes I decided to combine a few together to make what I think is delicious.

1 Tablespoon Oil (I use rapeseed)
2 Aubergines cut into bitesite chunks
3 Tablespoons Honey (or Agarve if you want it vegan)
3 Tablespoons Dark Soy Sauce
(you can use light but I find dark makes it stickier)
2 Garlic Cloves crushed
Salt and Pepper

You can add chilli flakes if you wish if you like things with a little heat

Makes 2 Portions

Heat the oil up in your pan and add all ingredients but the garlic, stir for 5 minutes then add the garlic and continue to cook for another 4-6 minutes until all the liquid is gone and the aubergine is cooked through.

I serve this simply with sticky rice but could be a side dish also.

EASE (1 Easy-5 Hard) -
Very Easy
COST (1 Cheap-5 Expensive)-
Aubergines can be a little expensive but worth it
TASTE (1 Yuck - 5 Yum) -
Just served with some sticky rice is delicious

8 foods and drinks that look vegetarian but may use animal products

Vegetarian and vegan drinkers, rejoice: By the end of this year, Guinness has said it will no longer use fish bladders to make its 256-year-old stout.

At issue is isinglass, a gelatin-like substance derived from the fish that helps filter the beer.

Guinness is certainly not alone in using animals in its product line, though.

Countless other companies rely on a dizzying variety of animal ingredients to manufacture their foods and beverages.

Here's a list of the most common — and surprising — classes of products to watch out for, and the non-vegetarian-friendly ingredients they might contain or rely on.
